1Chinda sotaṁ parakkamma,

Cut the stream, striving!

2kāme panuda brāhmaṇa;

Cast aside sensual pleasures, brahmin.

3Saṅkhārānaṁ khayaṁ ñatvā,

Knowing the ending of conditions,

4akataññūsi brāhmaṇa.

know the uncreated, brahmin.

5Yadā dvayesu dhammesu,

When a brahmin has gone beyond

6pāragū hoti brāhmaṇo;

dualistic phenomena,

7Athassa sabbe saṁyogā,

then they consciously

8atthaṁ gacchanti jānato.

make an end of all fetters.

9Yassa pāraṁ apāraṁ vā,

One for whom there is no crossing over

10pārāpāraṁ na vijjati;

or crossing back, or crossing over and back;

11Vītaddaraṁ visaṁyuttaṁ,

stress-free, detached,

12tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

13Jhāyiṁ virajamāsīnaṁ,

Absorbed, rid of hopes,

14katakiccamanāsavaṁ;

their task completed, without defilements,

15Uttamatthamanuppattaṁ,

arrived at the highest goal:

16tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

17Divā tapati ādicco,

The sun blazes by day,

18rattimābhāti candimā;

the moon radiates at night,

19Sannaddho khattiyo tapati,

the aristocrat shines in armor,

20jhāyī tapati brāhmaṇo;

and the brahmin shines in absorption.

21Atha sabbamahorattiṁ,

But all day and all night,

22buddho tapati tejasā.

the Buddha blazes with glory.

23Bāhitapāpoti brāhmaṇo,

A brahmin’s so-called <j>since they’ve banished evil,

24Samacariyā samaṇoti vuccati;

an ascetic’s so-called <j>since they live a serene life.

25Pabbājayamattano malaṁ,

One who has renounced all stains

26Tasmā “pabbajito”ti vuccati.

is said to be a “renunciant”.

27Na brāhmaṇassa pahareyya,

One should never strike a brahmin,

28nāssa muñcetha brāhmaṇo;

nor should a brahmin retaliate.

29Dhī brāhmaṇassa hantāraṁ,

Woe to the one who hurts a brahmin,

30tato dhī yassa muñcati.

and woe for the one who retaliates.

31Na brāhmaṇassetadakiñci seyyo,

Nothing is better for a brahmin

32Yadā nisedho manaso piyehi;

than to hold their mind back from attachment.

33Yato yato hiṁsamano nivattati,

From wherever a cruel wish recoils,

34Tato tato sammatimeva dukkhaṁ.

right there suffering subsides.

35Yassa kāyena vācāya,

Who does nothing wrong

36manasā natthi dukkaṭaṁ;

by body, speech or mind,

37Saṁvutaṁ tīhi ṭhānehi,

restrained in these three respects,

38tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

39Yamhā dhammaṁ vijāneyya,

You should graciously honor

40sammāsambuddhadesitaṁ;

the one from whom you learn the Dhamma

41Sakkaccaṁ taṁ namasseyya,

taught by the awakened Buddha,

42aggihuttaṁva brāhmaṇo.

as a brahmin honors the sacred flame.

43Na jaṭāhi na gottena,

Not by matted hair or family,

44na jaccā hoti brāhmaṇo;

or birth is one a brahmin.

45Yamhi saccañca dhammo ca,

Those who are truthful and principled:

46so sucī so ca brāhmaṇo.

they are pure, they are brahmins.

47Kiṁ te jaṭāhi dummedha,

Why the matted hair, you simpleton,

48kiṁ te ajinasāṭiyā;

and why the skin of deer?

49Abbhantaraṁ te gahanaṁ,

The tangle is inside you,

50bāhiraṁ parimajjasi.

yet you polish up your outsides.

51Paṁsukūladharaṁ jantuṁ,

A personage who wears robes of rags,

52kisaṁ dhamanisanthataṁ;

lean, their limbs showing veins,

53Ekaṁ vanasmiṁ jhāyantaṁ,

meditating alone in the forest,

54tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

55Na cāhaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ brūmi,

I don’t call someone a brahmin

56yonijaṁ mattisambhavaṁ;

after the mother’s womb they’re born from.

57Bhovādi nāma so hoti,

If they still have attachments,

58sace hoti sakiñcano;

they’re just someone who says “worthy”.

59Akiñcanaṁ anādānaṁ,

Having nothing, taking nothing:

60tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

61Sabbasaṁyojanaṁ chetvā,

Having cut off all fetters

62yo ve na paritassati;

they have no anxiety.

63Saṅgātigaṁ visaṁyuttaṁ,

They’ve slipped their chains and are detached:

64tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

65Chetvā naddhiṁ varattañca,

They’ve cut the strap and harness,

66sandānaṁ sahanukkamaṁ;

the halter and bridle too,

67Ukkhittapalighaṁ buddhaṁ,

with cross-bar lifted, they’re awakened:

68tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

69Akkosaṁ vadhabandhañca,

Abuse, killing, caging:

70aduṭṭho yo titikkhati;

they endure these without anger.

71Khantībalaṁ balānīkaṁ,

Patience is their powerful army:

72tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

73Akkodhanaṁ vatavantaṁ,

Not irritable or pretentious,

74sīlavantaṁ anussadaṁ;

dutiful in precepts and observances,

75Dantaṁ antimasārīraṁ,

tamed, bearing their final body:

76tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

77Vāri pokkharapatteva,

Like water from a lotus leaf,

78āraggeriva sāsapo;

like a mustard seed off a pin-point,

79Yo na limpati kāmesu,

sensual pleasures slip off them:

80tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

81Yo dukkhassa pajānāti,

They understand for themselves

82idheva khayamattano;

the end of suffering in this life;

83Pannabhāraṁ visaṁyuttaṁ,

with burden put down, detached:

84tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

85Gambhīrapaññaṁ medhāviṁ,

Deep in wisdom, intelligent,

86maggāmaggassa kovidaṁ;

expert in the path and what is not the path;

87Uttamatthamanuppattaṁ,

arrived at the highest goal:

88tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

89Asaṁsaṭṭhaṁ gahaṭṭhehi,

Mixing with neither

90anāgārehi cūbhayaṁ;

householders nor the homeless;

91Anokasārimappicchaṁ,

a migrant with no bastion, few in wishes:

92tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

93Nidhāya daṇḍaṁ bhūtesu,

They’ve laid aside violence

94tasesu thāvaresu ca;

against creatures firm and frail;

95Yo na hanti na ghāteti,

not killing or making others kill:

96tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

97Aviruddhaṁ viruddhesu,

Not fighting among those who fight,

98attadaṇḍesu nibbutaṁ;

quenched among those who have taken up arms,

99Sādānesu anādānaṁ,

not grasping among those who grasp:

100tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

101Yassa rāgo ca doso ca,

They’ve discarded greed and hate,

102māno makkho ca pātito;

along with conceit and contempt,

103Sāsaporiva āraggā,

like a mustard seed off the point of a pin:

104tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

105Akakkasaṁ viññāpaniṁ,

The words they utter

106giraṁ saccamudīraye;

are polished, informative, and true,

107Yāya nābhisaje kañci,

and don’t offend anyone:

108tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

109Yodha dīghaṁ va rassaṁ vā,

They don’t steal anything in the world,

110aṇuṁ thūlaṁ subhāsubhaṁ;

long or short,

111Loke adinnaṁ nādiyati,

fine or coarse, beautiful or ugly:

112tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

113Āsā yassa na vijjanti,

They have no hope

114asmiṁ loke paramhi ca;

in this world or the next;

115Nirāsāsaṁ visaṁyuttaṁ,

with no need for hope, detached:

116tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

117Yassālayā na vijjanti,

They have no clinging,

118aññāya akathaṅkathī;

knowledge has freed them of indecision,

119Amatogadhamanuppattaṁ,

they’ve arrived at the objective, freedom from death:

120tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

121Yodha puññañca pāpañca,

They’ve escaped clinging

122ubho saṅgamupaccagā;

to both good and bad deeds;

123Asokaṁ virajaṁ suddhaṁ,

sorrowless, stainless, pure:

124tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

125Candaṁva vimalaṁ suddhaṁ,

Pure as the spotless moon,

126vippasannamanāvilaṁ;

clear and undisturbed,

127Nandībhavaparikkhīṇaṁ,

they’ve ended relish for rebirth:

128tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

129Yomaṁ palipathaṁ duggaṁ,

They’ve got past this grueling swamp

130saṁsāraṁ mohamaccagā;

of delusion, transmigration.

131Tiṇṇo pāraṅgato jhāyī,

Meditating in stillness, free of indecision,

132anejo akathaṅkathī;

they have crossed over to the far shore.

133Anupādāya nibbuto,

They’re quenched by not grasping:

134tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

135Yodha kāme pahantvāna,

They’ve given up sensual stimulations,

136anāgāro paribbaje;

and have gone forth from lay life;

137Kāmabhavaparikkhīṇaṁ,

they’ve ended rebirth in the sensual realm:

138tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

139Yodha taṇhaṁ pahantvāna,

They’ve given up craving,

140anāgāro paribbaje;

and have gone forth from lay life;

141Taṇhābhavaparikkhīṇaṁ,

they’ve ended craving to be reborn:

142tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

143Yodha taṇhaṁ pahantvāna,

They’ve given up craving,

144anāgāro paribbaje;

and have gone forth from lay life;

145Taṇhābhavaparikkhīṇaṁ,

they’ve ended craving to be reborn:

146tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

147Hitvā mānusakaṁ yogaṁ,

They’ve thrown off the human yoke,

148dibbaṁ yogaṁ upaccagā;

and slipped out of the heavenly yoke;

149Sabbayogavisaṁyuttaṁ,

unyoked from all yokes:

150tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

151Hitvā ratiñca aratiñca,

Giving up desire and discontent,

152sītibhūtaṁ nirūpadhiṁ;

they’re cooled and free of attachments;

153Sabbalokābhibhuṁ vīraṁ,

a hero, master of the whole world:

154tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

155Cutiṁ yo vedi sattānaṁ,

They know the passing away

156upapattiñca sabbaso;

and rebirth of all beings;

157Asattaṁ sugataṁ buddhaṁ,

unattached, holy, awakened:

158tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

159Yassa gatiṁ na jānanti,

Gods, centaurs, and humans

160devā gandhabbamānusā;

don’t know their destiny;

161Khīṇāsavaṁ arahantaṁ,

the perfected ones with defilements ended:

162tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

163Yassa pure ca pacchā ca,

They have nothing before or after,

164majjhe ca natthi kiñcanaṁ;

or even in between.

165Akiñcanaṁ anādānaṁ,

Having nothing, taking nothing:

166tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

167Usabhaṁ pavaraṁ vīraṁ,

Captain of the herd, excellent hero,

168mahesiṁ vijitāvinaṁ;

great seer and victor;

169Anejaṁ nhātakaṁ buddhaṁ,

unstirred, washed, awakened:

170tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.

that’s who I declare a brahmin.

171Pubbenivāsaṁ yo vedi,

One who knows their past lives,

172saggāpāyañca passati;

sees heaven and places of loss,

173Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto,

and has attained the end of rebirth;

174abhiññāvosito muni;

a sage of perfect insight

175Sabbavositavosānaṁ,

at the summit of spiritual perfection:

176tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ.
