Doctrine
The foundational teaching of Buddhism, proclaimed by the Buddha in his first sermon at Deer Park (Sarnath). The four truths are: (1) Dukkha — suffering/unsatisfactoriness exists; (2) Samudaya — suffering arises from craving (tanha); (3) Nirodha — suffering can cease; (4) Magga — the Noble Eightfold Path leads to the cessation of suffering.
