1Yassa jitaṁ nāvajīyati,
He whose victory may not be undone,
2Jitaṁ yassa noyāti koci loke;
a victory unrivaled in all the world;
3Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ,
by what track would you trace that Buddha,
4Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha.
who leaves no track in his infinite range?
5Yassa jālinī visattikā,
Of craving, the weaver, the clinger, he has none:
6Taṇhā natthi kuhiñci netave;
so where can he be traced?
7Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ,
By what track would you trace that Buddha,
8Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha.
who leaves no track in his infinite range?
9Ye jhānapasutā dhīrā,
The attentive intent on absorption,
10nekkhammūpasame ratā;
who love the peace of renunciation,
11Devāpi tesaṁ pihayanti,
the Buddhas, ever mindful,
12sambuddhānaṁ satīmataṁ.
are envied by even the gods.
13Kiccho manussapaṭilābho,
It’s hard to gain a human birth;
14kicchaṁ maccāna jīvitaṁ;
the life of mortals is hard;
15Kicchaṁ saddhammassavanaṁ,
it’s hard to hear the true teaching;
16kiccho buddhānamuppādo.
the arising of Buddhas is hard.
17Sabbapāpassa akaraṇaṁ,
Not to do any evil;
18kusalassa upasampadā;
to embrace the good;
19Sacittapariyodapanaṁ,
to purify one’s mind:
20etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ.
this is the instruction of the Buddhas.
21Khantī paramaṁ tapo titikkhā,
Patient acceptance is the ultimate fervor.
22Nibbānaṁ paramaṁ vadanti buddhā;
Extinguishment is the ultimate, say the Buddhas.
23Na hi pabbajito parūpaghātī,
No true renunciate injures another,
24Na samaṇo hoti paraṁ viheṭhayanto.
nor does an ascetic hurt another.
25Anūpavādo anūpaghāto,
Not speaking ill nor doing harm;
26Pātimokkhe ca saṁvaro;
restraint in the monastic code;
27Mattaññutā ca bhattasmiṁ,
moderation in eating;
28Pantañca sayanāsanaṁ;
staying in remote lodgings;
29Adhicitte ca āyogo,
commitment to the higher mind—
30Etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ.
this is the instruction of the Buddhas.
31Na kahāpaṇavassena,
Even if it were raining money,
32titti kāmesu vijjati;
you’d not be sated in sensual pleasures.
33Appassādā dukhā kāmā,
An astute person understands that sensual pleasures
34iti viññāya paṇḍito.
offer little gratification and much suffering.
35Api dibbesu kāmesu,
Thus they find no delight
36ratiṁ so nādhigacchati;
even in celestial pleasures.
37Taṇhakkhayarato hoti,
A disciple of the fully awakened Buddha
38sammāsambuddhasāvako.
delights in the ending of craving.
39Bahuṁ ve saraṇaṁ yanti,
So many go for refuge
40pabbatāni vanāni ca;
to mountains and forest groves,
41Ārāmarukkhacetyāni,
to shrines in tended parks;
42manussā bhayatajjitā.
those people are driven by fear.
43Netaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ,
But such refuge is no sanctuary,
44netaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ;
it is no supreme refuge.
45Netaṁ saraṇamāgamma,
By going to that refuge,
46sabbadukkhā pamuccati.
you’re not released from all suffering.
47Yo ca buddhañca dhammañca,
One gone for refuge to the Buddha,
48saṅghañca saraṇaṁ gato;
to his teaching and to the Saṅgha,
49Cattāri ariyasaccāni,
sees the four noble truths
50sammappaññāya passati.
with right understanding:
51Dukkhaṁ dukkhasamuppādaṁ,
suffering, suffering’s origin,
52dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ;
suffering’s transcendence,
53Ariyaṁ caṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ,
and the noble eightfold path
54dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ.
that leads to the stilling of suffering.
55Etaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ,
Such refuge is a sanctuary,
56etaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ;
it is the supreme refuge.
57Etaṁ saraṇamāgamma,
By going to that refuge,
58sabbadukkhā pamuccati.
you’re released from all suffering.
59Dullabho purisājañño,
It’s hard to find a thoroughbred man:
60na so sabbattha jāyati;
they’re not born just anywhere.
61Yattha so jāyati dhīro,
A family where that attentive one is born
62taṁ kulaṁ sukhamedhati.
prospers in happiness.
63Sukho buddhānamuppādo,
Happy, the arising of Buddhas!
64sukhā saddhammadesanā;
Happy, the teaching of Dhamma!
65Sukhā saṅghassa sāmaggī,
Happy is the harmony of the Saṅgha,
66samaggānaṁ tapo sukho.
and the striving of the harmonious is happy.
67Pūjārahe pūjayato,
When a person venerates the worthy—
68buddhe yadi va sāvake;
the Buddha or his disciple,
69Papañcasamatikkante,
who have transcended proliferation,
70tiṇṇasokapariddave.
and have left behind grief and lamentation,
71Te tādise pūjayato,
quenched, fearing nothing from any quarter—
72nibbute akutobhaye;
the merit of one venerating such as these,
73Na sakkā puññaṁ saṅkhātuṁ,
cannot be calculated by anyone,
74imettamapi kenaci.
saying it is just this much.
