The Mauryan Emperor (c. 268-232 BCE) who converted to Buddhism after the bloody Kalinga War. He spread Buddhism throughout South Asia through his rock and pillar edicts promoting dharma (righteousness), non-violence, and religious tolerance. He convened the Third Buddhist Council and sent missionaries throughout the known world.
