The historical Buddha, founder of Buddhism. Born a prince of the Shakya clan in Lumbini (modern Nepal), he renounced his privileged life to seek the end of suffering. After six years of ascetic practice and meditation, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree at Bodh Gaya and spent 45 years teaching the Dharma.
