1Nidhīnaṁva pavattāraṁ,
Regard one who sees your faults
2yaṁ passe vajjadassinaṁ;
as a guide to a hidden treasure.
3Niggayhavādiṁ medhāviṁ,
Stay close to one so wise and astute
4tādisaṁ paṇḍitaṁ bhaje;
who corrects you when you need it.
5Tādisaṁ bhajamānassa,
Sticking close to such an impartial person,
6seyyo hoti na pāpiyo.
things get better, not worse.
7Ovadeyyānusāseyya,
Advise and instruct;
8asabbhā ca nivāraye;
curb wickedness:
9Satañhi so piyo hoti,
for you shall be loved by the good,
10asataṁ hoti appiyo.
and disliked by the bad.
11Na bhaje pāpake mitte,
Don’t mix with bad friends,
12na bhaje purisādhame;
nor with the worst of men.
13Bhajetha mitte kalyāṇe,
Mix with spiritual friends,
14bhajetha purisuttame.
and with the best of men.
15Dhammapīti sukhaṁ seti,
Through joy in the teaching you sleep at ease,
16vippasannena cetasā;
with clear and confident heart.
17Ariyappavedite dhamme,
An astute person always delights in the teaching
18sadā ramati paṇḍito.
proclaimed by the Noble One.
19Udakañhi nayanti nettikā,
Irrigators guide water,
20Usukārā namayanti tejanaṁ;
fletchers straighten arrows,
21Dāruṁ namayanti tacchakā,
carpenters carve timber,
22Attānaṁ damayanti paṇḍitā.
the astute tame themselves.
23Selo yathā ekaghano,
As the wind cannot stir
24vātena na samīrati;
a solid mass of rock,
25Evaṁ nindāpasaṁsāsu,
so too blame and praise
26na samiñjanti paṇḍitā.
do not affect the wise.
27Yathāpi rahado gambhīro,
Like a deep lake,
28vippasanno anāvilo;
clear and unclouded,
29Evaṁ dhammāni sutvāna,
so clear are the astute
30vippasīdanti paṇḍitā.
when they hear the teachings.
31Sabbattha ve sappurisā cajanti,
True persons give up everything,
32Na kāmakāmā lapayanti santo;
they don’t cajole for the things they desire.
33Sukhena phuṭṭhā atha vā dukhena,
Though touched by sadness or happiness,
34Na uccāvacaṁ paṇḍitā dassayanti.
the astute appear neither depressed nor elated.
35Na attahetu na parassa hetu,
Never wish for success by unjust means,
36Na puttamicche na dhanaṁ na raṭṭhaṁ;
for your own sake or that of another,
37Na iccheyya adhammena samiddhimattano,
desiring children, wealth, or nation;
38Sa sīlavā paññavā dhammiko siyā.
rather, be virtuous, wise, and just.
39Appakā te manussesu,
Few are those among humans
40ye janā pāragāmino;
who cross to the far shore.
41Athāyaṁ itarā pajā,
The rest just run around
42tīramevānudhāvati.
on the near shore.
43Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte,
When the teaching is well explained,
44dhamme dhammānuvattino;
those who practice accordingly
45Te janā pāramessanti,
will cross over
46maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ.
Death’s dominion so hard to pass.
47Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya,
Rid of dark qualities,
48Sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito;
an astute person should develop the bright.
49Okā anokamāgamma,
Leaving home behind
50Viveke yattha dūramaṁ.
for the seclusion so hard to enjoy,
51Tatrābhiratimiccheyya,
try to find satisfaction there,
52hitvā kāme akiñcano;
having left behind sensual pleasures.
53Pariyodapeyya attānaṁ,
Owning nothing, an astute person
54cittaklesehi paṇḍito.
would cleanse themselves of mental corruptions.
55Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu,
Those whose minds are rightly developed
56sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ;
in the awakening factors;
57Ādānapaṭinissagge,
who, letting go of attachments,
58anupādāya ye ratā;
delight in not grasping:
59Khīṇāsavā jutimanto,
with defilements ended, brilliant,
60te loke parinibbutā.
they are quenched in this world.
