1Susukhaṁ vata jīvāma,
Let us live so very happily,
2verinesu averino;
loving among the hostile.
3Verinesu manussesu,
Among hostile humans,
4viharāma averino.
let us live with love.
5Susukhaṁ vata jīvāma,
Let us live so very happily,
6āturesu anāturā;
healthy among the ailing.
7Āturesu manussesu,
Among ailing humans
8viharāma anāturā.
let us live healthily.
9Susukhaṁ vata jīvāma,
Let us live so very happily,
10ussukesu anussukā;
content among the greedy.
11Ussukesu manussesu,
Among greedy humans,
12viharāma anussukā.
let us live content.
13Susukhaṁ vata jīvāma,
Let us live so very happily,
14yesaṁ no natthi kiñcanaṁ;
we who have nothing.
15Pītibhakkhā bhavissāma,
We shall feed on rapture,
16devā ābhassarā yathā.
like the gods of streaming radiance.
17Jayaṁ veraṁ pasavati,
Victory breeds enmity;
18dukkhaṁ seti parājito;
the defeated sleep badly.
19Upasanto sukhaṁ seti,
The peaceful sleep at ease,
20hitvā jayaparājayaṁ.
having left victory and defeat behind.
21Natthi rāgasamo aggi,
There is no fire like greed,
22Natthi dosasamo kali;
no crime like hate,
23Natthi khandhasamā dukkhā,
no suffering like the aggregates,
24Natthi santiparaṁ sukhaṁ.
no bliss beyond peace.
25Jighacchāparamā rogā,
Hunger is the worst illness,
26saṅkhāraparamā dukhā;
conditions are the worst suffering.
27Etaṁ ñatvā yathābhūtaṁ,
For one who truly knows this,
28nibbānaṁ paramaṁ sukhaṁ.
extinguishment is the ultimate happiness.
29Ārogyaparamā lābhā,
Health is the ultimate blessing;
30Santuṭṭhiparamaṁ dhanaṁ;
contentment, the ultimate wealth;
31Vissāsaparamā ñāti,
trust is the ultimate family;
32Nibbānaṁ paramaṁ sukhaṁ.
extinguishment, the ultimate happiness.
33Pavivekarasaṁ pitvā,
Having drunk the nectar of seclusion
34rasaṁ upasamassa ca;
and the nectar of peace—
35Niddaro hoti nippāpo,
free of stress, free of evil,
36dhammapītirasaṁ pivaṁ.
drink the joyous nectar of truth.
37Sāhu dassanamariyānaṁ,
It’s good to see the noble ones,
38sannivāso sadā sukho;
staying with them is always good.
39Adassanena bālānaṁ,
Were you not to see fools,
40niccameva sukhī siyā.
you’d always be happy.
41Bālasaṅgatacārī hi,
For one who consorts with fools
42dīghamaddhāna socati;
grieves long.
43Dukkho bālehi saṁvāso,
Painful is living with fools,
44amitteneva sabbadā;
like being stuck with your enemy.
45Dhīro ca sukhasaṁvāso,
Happy is living with an attentive one,
46ñātīnaṁva samāgamo.
like meeting with your kin.
48Dhīrañca paññañca bahussutañca,
An attentive one, wise and learned,
49Dhorayhasīlaṁ vatavantamariyaṁ;
a behemoth of virtue, true to their vows, noble:
50Taṁ tādisaṁ sappurisaṁ sumedhaṁ,
follow a true and intelligent person such as this,
51Bhajetha nakkhattapathaṁva candimā.
as the moon tracks the path of the stars.
