1Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.
2ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
3Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.
Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side.
4Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Standing to one side, that deity addressed the Buddha in verse:
5“Bahū devā manussā ca,
“Many gods and humans
6maṅgalāni acintayuṁ;
have thought about blessings
7Ākaṅkhamānā sotthānaṁ,
desiring well-being:
8brūhi maṅgalamuttamaṁ”.
declare the highest blessing.”
9“Asevanā ca bālānaṁ,
“Not to fraternize with fools,
10paṇḍitānañca sevanā;
but to fraternize with the wise,
11Pūjā ca pūjaneyyānaṁ,
and honoring those worthy of honor:
12etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
this is the highest blessing.
13Patirūpadesavāso ca,
Living in a suitable region,
14pubbe ca katapuññatā;
having made merit in the past,
15Attasammāpaṇidhi ca,
being rightly resolved in oneself,
16etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
this is the highest blessing.
17Bāhusaccañca sippañca,
Education and a craft,
18vinayo ca susikkhito;
discipline and training,
19Subhāsitā ca yā vācā,
and well-spoken speech:
20etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
this is the highest blessing.
21Mātāpitu upaṭṭhānaṁ,
Caring for mother and father,
22puttadārassa saṅgaho;
kindness to children and partners,
23Anākulā ca kammantā,
and unstressful work:
24etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
this is the highest blessing.
25Dānañca dhammacariyā ca,
Giving and righteous conduct,
26ñātakānañca saṅgaho;
kindness to relatives,
27Anavajjāni kammāni,
blameless deeds:
28etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
this is the highest blessing.
29Āratī viratī pāpā,
Desisting and abstaining from evil,
30majjapānā ca saṁyamo;
avoiding drinking liquor,
31Appamādo ca dhammesu,
diligence in good qualities:
32etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
this is the highest blessing.
33Gāravo ca nivāto ca,
Respect and placidity,
34santuṭṭhi ca kataññutā;
contentment and gratitude,
35Kālena dhammassavanaṁ,
and timely listening to the teaching:
36etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
this is the highest blessing.
37Khantī ca sovacassatā,
Patience, being easy to admonish,
38samaṇānañca dassanaṁ;
the sight of ascetics,
39Kālena dhammasākacchā,
and timely discussion of the teaching:
40etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
this is the highest blessing.
41Tapo ca brahmacariyañca,
Fervor and chastity
42Ariyasaccāna dassanaṁ;
seeing the noble truths,
43Nibbānasacchikiriyā ca,
and realization of extinguishment:
44Etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
this is the highest blessing.
45Phuṭṭhassa lokadhammehi,
Though touched by worldly things,
46Cittaṁ yassa na kampati;
their mind does not tremble;
47Asokaṁ virajaṁ khemaṁ,
sorrowless, stainless, secure,
48Etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
this is the highest blessing.
49Etādisāni katvāna,
Having completed these things,
50Sabbattha maparājitā;
undefeated everywhere;
51Sabbattha sotthiṁ gacchanti,
everywhere they go in safety:
52Taṁ tesaṁ maṅgalamuttaman”ti.
this is their highest blessing.”
