Compassion in Buddhism is the wish for all beings to be free from suffering. It is one of the Four Brahmaviharas and a core quality of the bodhisattva. The Dalai Lama has called compassion 'the essence of religion.' In Mahayana, great compassion (mahakaruna) motivates the bodhisattva path.
