Dependent Origination

Dependent Origination is the teaching that all phenomena arise in dependence upon causes and conditions. The twelve-link chain describes how ignorance leads through formation, consciousness, name-and-form, six sense bases, contact, feeling, craving, clinging, becoming, birth, and aging-and-death. Understanding this chain is central to Buddhist soteriology.
