1“Karaṇīyamatthakusalena,
Those who are skilled in the meaning of scripture
2Yanta santaṁ padaṁ abhisamecca;
should practice as follows <j>to realize the state of peace.
3Sakko ujū ca suhujū ca,
Let them be capable and upright, very upright,
4Sūvaco cassa mudu anatimānī.
easy to speak to, gentle and humble;
5Santussako ca subharo ca,
content and unburdensome,
6Appakicco ca sallahukavutti;
unbusied, living lightly,
7Santindriyo ca nipako ca,
alert, with senses calmed,
8Appagabbho kulesvananugiddho.
courteous, not fawning on families.
9Na ca khuddamācare kiñci,
Let them not do the slightest thing
10Yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṁ;
that others who are wise would blame.
11Sukhino va khemino hontu,
May they be happy and safe!
12Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā.
May all beings be happy!
13Ye keci pāṇabhūtatthi,
Whatever living creatures there are
14Tasā vā thāvarā vanavasesā;
with not a one left out—
15Dīghā vā ye va mahantā,
frail or firm, long or large,
16Majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā.
medium, small, tiny or round,
17Diṭṭhā vā ye va adiṭṭhā,
seen or unseen,
18Ye va dūre vasanti avidūre;
living far or near,
19Bhūtā va sambhavesī va,
those who have been born <j>and those about to be born—
20Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā.
may all beings be happy!
21Na paro paraṁ nikubbetha,
Let none deceive another,
22Nātimaññetha katthaci na kañci;
nor look down on anyone anywhere.
23Byārosanā paṭighasañña,
Though provoked or aggrieved,
24Nāññamaññassa dukkhamiccheyya.
let them not wish pain on each other.
25Mātā yathā niyaṁ puttam
Even as a mother would protect with her life
26Āyusā ekaputtamanurakkhe;
her child, her only child,
27Evampi sabbabhūtesu,
so too for all creatures
28Mānasaṁ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṁ.
unfold a boundless heart.
29Mettañca sabbalokasmi,
With love for the whole world,
30Mānasaṁ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṁ;
unfold a boundless heart:
31Uddhaṁ adho ca tiriyañca,
above, below, all round,
32Asambādhaṁ averamasapattaṁ.
unconstricted, without enmity or foe.
33Tiṭṭhaṁ caraṁ nisinno va,
When standing, walking, sitting,
34Sayāno yāvatāssa vitamiddho;
or lying down while yet unweary,
35Etaṁ satiṁ adhiṭṭheyya,
keep this ever in mind;
36Brahmametaṁ vihāramidhamāhu.
for this, they say, is a divine meditation <j>in this life.
37Diṭṭhiñca anupaggamma,
Avoiding harmful views,
38Sīlavā dassanena sampanno;
virtuous, accomplished in insight,
39Kāmesu vinaya gedhaṁ,
with desire for sensual pleasures dispelled,
40Na hi jātuggabbhaseyya punaretī”ti.
they never return to a womb again.
