The Middle Way is the path between the extremes of self-indulgence and self-mortification, proclaimed by the Buddha in his first sermon. More broadly, it refers to the avoidance of extreme philosophical positions — eternalism and annihilationism. In Mahayana, Nagarjuna's Madhyamaka philosophy develops the Middle Way as the avoidance of reification and nihilism.
